Maldives Construction Ministry Completes Projects Worth MVR 1.9 Billion in 2024, Amid Budget Constraints

The Maldives Ministry of Construction has completed 37 significant projects valued at MVR 1.976 billion in 2024, marking a milestone for President Mohamed Muizzu's administration. At a press briefing, Construction Minister Muttalib highlighted the range of projects finalized this year, which include coastal protection, water and sanitation systems, port infrastructure, and land reclamation.
The completed projects comprise coastal protection work on three islands, 29 water and sanitation initiatives, and several port reconstruction projects in Alifu Alifu Maalhos, Alifu Dhaalu Fenfushi, and M. Muli. Additionally, the Noonu Maafaru land reclamation project and the G. Dh Thinadhoo road construction were among the year’s notable accomplishments.
Minister Muttalib also addressed the financial difficulties that the ministry faced, citing that the budget allocated earlier this year was insufficient for the intended scope of work. He stated that pending payments from previous years and limited funds for new projects created a challenging environment for advancing essential infrastructure projects.
Looking forward, the ministry expects to complete 21 additional projects by November 17, 2024. These upcoming projects include three more coastal protection efforts, one land reclamation, nine water and sewerage systems, and an airport development, as part of the ministry’s ongoing commitment to enhancing infrastructure across the Maldives.
These achievements reflect the government’s dedication to improving local infrastructure despite financial and logistical hurdles, according to Muttalib. The Construction Ministry has expressed optimism about sustaining the momentum for future projects while continuing to manage budgetary challenges effectively.
