4,000 New Tourist Beds Planned for Hanimaadhoo Ahead of Airport Completion: Minister Faisal

The Maldivian government aims to expand tourism in Boduthiladhunmathi Atoll by adding 4,000 more tourist beds ahead of the completion of Hanimaadhoo International Airport, set for March next year.
Tourism Minister Ibrahim Faisal announced the goal during a recent parliamentary session in response to a question from a member of parliament. The expansion is part of broader efforts by the administration of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu to promote tourism in northern atolls, with a special focus on Boduthiladhunmathi.
Minister Faisal highlighted that the government is working on the President’s guidance to prioritize the development of the tourism sector and improve the livelihoods of local communities. As part of this initiative, the government is actively seeking foreign investment to accelerate the sector’s growth.
Currently, there are 1,886 operational tourist beds in the atoll, with several areas designated for further tourism development. The minister explained that the government is collaborating with international investors, having held forums in countries such as India and the UAE, with plans to expand these efforts in the coming year.
Hanimaadhoo, recognized for its cultural heritage and historical significance, has been identified as a key tourism hub with high potential for further development. Minister Faisal emphasized that the region offers tourists a unique opportunity to experience the Maldives' rich cultural traditions while enjoying its natural beauty.
The Hanimaadhoo International Airport project, a significant infrastructure development for the northern atolls, is expected to boost tourist arrivals and transform the region into a key destination for both domestic and international travelers. The addition of 4,000 beds will support this projected influx and foster economic growth in the area.
