Applications Open for Fishermen’s Day Awards 2024

The Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources has officially opened applications for the annual Fishermen’s Day awards, inviting nominations for three key categories aimed at recognizing and celebrating the contributions of Maldivian fishermen.
This year's awards include the 'Most Serving Young Fisherman' (for those under 35 years of age who are fully engaged in fishing without other income sources), the 'Most Experienced Fisherman' (for those above 35 years of age), and the 'Award for the Fisherman Engaged in the Main Work of Earning Income'.
Applicants who meet the eligibility criteria are required to submit a completed form, which can be downloaded from the Ministry’s website, www.fisheries.gov.mv. The submission deadline is set for 14:00 hrs on November 7, 2024. Nominations can be made either by the fishermen themselves or by others on their behalf, and forms can be submitted to the ministry via email at [email protected].
Fishermen’s Day, now in its 44th year, was first celebrated in 1980 under former President Maumoon Abdul Gayyoom’s administration, with the aim of acknowledging the crucial role fishermen play in the national economy. The celebration seeks to honor outstanding work done by fishermen and to highlight the continued significance of the fishing industry in contributing to the Maldives' economy and food security.
