President His Excellency Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has laid out a vision for the Maldives’ future, where young people lead the charge in driving digital innovation, economic opportunities, and social equity. Speaking at the Plenary Segment of the Summit of the Future at the United Nations General Assembly Hall, President Muizzu stressed the importance of making the multilateral system not just an abstract idea but a practical tool to address pressing global challenges.
During his address, President Muizzu presented three key proposals aimed at reshaping the multilateral system for more impactful results:
- 1. Empowering Youth: The President called for global declarations and agreements that truly engage and inspire the youth. He outlined his government’s initiatives to actively include young people in the policymaking process, offering them platforms to harness their creativity and potential.
- 2. Tackling Climate Change: With 62% of young people globally experiencing climate anxiety, President Muizzu reiterated the Maldives' commitment to combatting climate change. He urged world leaders to uphold their responsibilities, emphasizing that climate action must be swift and decisive.
- 3. Sustainable Financing: President Muizzu stressed the need for reliable development and climate financing, calling for a financial system that works for everyone. He highlighted that only through equitable funding can real progress be made in addressing global issues.
In his closing remarks, the President emphasized that future generations will judge the international community not by the processes they start, but by the concrete actions they take. He also called for an end to the ongoing war in Gaza, urging the world to hold those responsible for human rights violations accountable, and advocated for granting full UN membership to the State of Palestine.
President Muizzu is currently in New York attending the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), where world leaders are gathering to address key global issues.
