MVR 473 Million Disbursed in Student Loans This Year, Confirms Higher Education Minister

Higher Education Minister Dr. Mariyam Mariya confirmed that more than MVR 473 million has been issued in student loans this year to students seeking higher education. Speaking at a meeting in the President's Office, the minister addressed concerns regarding delays in disbursing funds for students who commenced their studies in September, reassuring that the process is ongoing and prioritized.
Minister Mariya clarified that student loan payments are released every six months, once the ministry verifies that the students are enrolled for each semester. The loan facility is available for students studying in specific countries, with potential flexibility for those wishing to study elsewhere if the costs align with existing parameters.
Minister Mariya, who also spoke at the event, highlighted issues with students not submitting the necessary paperwork, which has contributed to delays in processing loan payments. The ministry is actively addressing these documentation challenges.
In response to concerns raised by students studying abroad who have yet to receive their loan disbursements, the minister stated that if delays affect a student's studies, the government will issue a sponsor letter to the respective university, assuring that funds will be provided.
This year, 1,709 students applied for student loans, competing for 500 available opportunities. Minister Mariya encouraged all students to apply and assured that the loans would be disbursed without further interruptions.
