Maldives Issues New Guidelines for Whale Shark Protection on International Whale Shark Conservation Day

In a significant step towards marine conservation, Maldives' Cities, Local Government and Public Works Minister Adam Shareef Umar has issued new guidelines aimed at protecting and managing whale sharks and their environments. The guidelines were unveiled during a ceremony in Dhiggaru, held to mark International Whale Shark Conservation Day on August 30.
The newly issued standards lay out detailed processes that must be followed to preserve the marine habitats of the Maldives, ensuring the protection of the nation's rich biodiversity. The guidelines are designed to maintain the beauty and ecological balance of the Maldives’ marine environments, which are crucial to both the local economy and global biodiversity.
Minister Adam Shareef Umar was joined at the ceremony by Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim, further highlighting the government's unified approach to environmental conservation. The presence of both ministers underscores the importance the Maldives places on sustainable practices and the preservation of its natural heritage.
The Maldives is globally recognized for its vibrant marine life, with whale sharks being one of the most iconic species found in its waters. These gentle giants attract tourists from around the world, making their protection not only an environmental concern but also an economic priority for the country.
The issuance of these guidelines aligns with international efforts to safeguard whale sharks, particularly as the Festival of Whale Sharks is celebrated globally on August 30. This annual event raises awareness about the importance of conserving whale sharks, which are classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
