Hithadhoo Central MP Ahmed Azaan has called for stronger measures against those who neglect migrant workers in the Maldives, identifying this as a critical factor in the ongoing challenges related to the expatriate population. Speaking before the Security Services Committee, Azaan emphasized the need for stringent penalties, including a proposed fine of MVR 2 lakh for individuals found guilty of such neglect.
The proposed amendment, which the government is currently considering, aims to address the growing concern over undocumented immigrants in the Maldives, a problem Azaan described as a significant threat to national security. The MP stressed that the issue has escalated because those responsible for bringing in foreign workers have not been held accountable for their actions.
"Action against individuals who exhibit negligence towards migrant labor is what we are discussing. Things have transpired today because they haven't been targeted by action," Azaan remarked during the committee session. His comments reflect a broader concern about the lack of enforcement and the need for comprehensive legal reforms to protect the rights of migrant workers.
Azaan also expressed his support for passing the Bill with all its clauses intact, arguing that it is crucial to implement severe punishments to ensure compliance and prevent further neglect of expatriate workers.
The issue of migrant workers has been a longstanding challenge in the Maldives, with reports of exploitation, poor living conditions, and lack of legal protection. Azaan's call for stricter penalties underscores the urgency of addressing these problems and ensuring that those who bring foreign workers into the country are held accountable for their well-being.
As the government moves forward with the proposed amendments, it remains to be seen how these changes will impact the lives of migrant workers and the broader issue of undocumented immigration in the Maldives.
