The Maldives Parliament's National Security Services Committee (241 Committee) has unanimously approved a motion to ban Israeli passport holders from entering the country. This decision, proposed by MP Mohamed Shahid of Hulhudhoo and seconded by MP Mohamed Ismail of Vilimale', stipulates that the ban will remain in effect until Israel ceases its military actions in Palestine.
The legislative initiative was initially introduced by MP Meekail Ahmed Naseem of Galolhu South in May 2024, aiming to amend the Immigration Act to enforce the ban. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu's cabinet endorsed the proposal on June 2, 2024, recommending legal amendments and the formation of a subcommittee to oversee its implementation.
Maldives Immigration has raised concerns regarding the enforcement of the ban, particularly in identifying Israeli citizens with dual nationality who may enter the country using passports from other nations. Immigration officials noted the lack of mechanisms to detect dual citizenship, suggesting that the ban apply only to individuals presenting Israeli passports upon entry.
The move aligns with growing domestic support for Palestine within the Maldives. Public demonstrations have called for a boycott of Israeli products and a ban on Israeli tourists. In response to the Maldivian government's stance, Israel's Foreign Ministry has advised its citizens, including those with dual citizenship, to avoid traveling to the Maldives.
The proposed legislation is set to proceed to a parliamentary vote, where it is expected to pass given the unanimous committee support. If enacted, the Maldives will join a list of countries imposing entry restrictions on Israeli nationals in protest of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
