NDMA Issues Precautionary Guidelines Amid Severe Weather Forecast

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued a set of precautionary guidelines in response to a severe weather forecast for the Maldives. According to the National Weather Service, the southwest monsoon is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm starting Sunday, bringing scattered thundershowers and light to moderate rainfall across the nation. Wind speeds are predicted to reach between 40 to 45 miles per hour.
The NDMA has urged the public to take immediate preventive measures to protect their homes and property from potential damage. Key recommendations include preparing for possible flooding by placing sandbags in front of homes and moving valuable items to higher ground.
Further, the authority recommended that seafarers exercise extreme caution and stay informed about the latest weather updates before embarking on their journeys. The public has been advised to switch off electrical appliances when not in use and to secure any items that could be torn apart by strong winds.
The Maldives Meteorological Service has also issued an advisory, warning of strong winds and rough seas over the next few days. The public and seafarers are urged to stay vigilant and follow all safety guidelines to minimize risks.
These warnings come as the Maldives faces increasing challenges from extreme weather events, with authorities emphasizing the importance of preparedness and timely response to protect lives and property.
