Malaysian Airlines Resumes Flights to Maldives After Seven-Year Hiatus

Malaysia's national airline, Malaysia Airlines, has announced its decision to resume flights to the Maldives, according to a press release from Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL). The inaugural flight is scheduled to land at Velana International Airport (VIA) on Thursday morning, August 1.
The airline will operate daily flights using a 174-seat Boeing 737 Dash 8 aircraft. A special ceremony to welcome the first flight from Kuala Lumpur to Velana International Airport will be held, with senior officials from the Ministry of Tourism, MACL, Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), and Malaysia Airlines in attendance.
This move marks Malaysia Airlines' return to the Maldives after a seven-year hiatus, having last operated flights to the archipelago in 2017. The resumption of services is expected to bolster tourism and strengthen the air link between Malaysia and the Maldives.
Malaysia Airlines' decision to reintroduce flights to the Maldives comes at a time when both nations are seeking to enhance bilateral tourism and economic ties. The airline's return is anticipated to provide a significant boost to the tourism sector in the Maldives, which has been steadily recovering from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition to catering to tourists, the daily flights are expected to facilitate business travel and enhance connectivity between Kuala Lumpur and Malé, further solidifying the Maldives' status as a premier destination for international travelers.
The return of Malaysia Airlines is seen as a positive development for the Maldivian tourism industry, which relies heavily on strong air links with key source markets. With the daily flights set to commence, travellers from Malaysia will once again have convenient access to the stunning resorts and natural beauty of the Maldives.
