Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer announced that a Chinese bank has expressed interest in opening a branch in the Maldives. Minister Zameer made this statement during a program on 'Aslu TV,' highlighting the growing economic ties between the Maldives and China.
Minister Zameer emphasized the Maldives' current per capita income of $13,000 and the government's commitment to raising this figure to $17,000. He noted that the administration is focused on developing SMEs and providing opportunities for entrepreneurs by investing in large enterprises.
"We have signed an MoU to increase the per capita income from $13,000 to $17,000, which includes the establishment of a development bank," said Minister Zameer.
During a recent visit to China, the Chinese Foreign Minister mentioned that a Chinese bank had expressed interest in setting up a branch in the Maldives. The Ambassador of the Maldives to China is actively working on this initiative, though further details about the Chinese bank have not yet been released.
This development is seen as part of a broader effort by the Maldivian government to attract foreign investment and enhance economic growth. The establishment of a Chinese bank branch could provide significant support to local businesses and entrepreneurs, fostering economic development in the region.
