Former State Minister Zifleena Hassan Flees Maldives Amid Corruption Investigation

Former State Minister Zifleena Hassan has fled the country amid an ongoing investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) into her alleged purchase of an apartment in Hulhumale' for RF 3.5 million.
Zifleena, who is the first wife of former Foreign Minister Abdullah Shahid, reportedly left the Maldives with her children on Tuesday. After transiting in Colombo, Sri Lanka, she departed for an undisclosed location. Her current whereabouts remain unknown.
The ACC's investigation centers around Zifleena's purchase of the Hulhumale' apartment during her tenure as State Minister. The property is valued at RF 3.5 million, raising questions about the source of her funds given her official salary. Additionally, it has been revealed that an apartment in Hulhumale', valued at RF 3.8 million, is registered under her daughter's name, Aishath Misk. The combined value of the two properties owned by Zifleena and her daughter amounts to RF 7.3 million.
Critics have pointed out that the total salary of a State Minister over five years is less than RF 3 million, while Zifleena's previous occupation was as a teacher. These financial discrepancies have fueled suspicions of potential money laundering.
Despite repeated attempts to contact her for comments on the allegations, Zifleena did not respond to phone calls. The ACC continues its investigation, although there are concerns about the effectiveness of its efforts, given Zifleena's recent departure.
The situation has drawn significant public and media attention, with many calling for a thorough and transparent investigation into the financial dealings of former government officials. The ACC's ability to address these allegations effectively is seen as a crucial test of its commitment to combating corruption in the Maldives.
This case has highlighted the challenges faced by anti-corruption authorities in the Maldives, as well as the broader issue of financial accountability among public officials. The ACC's findings and subsequent actions will be closely watched as a measure of the government's dedication to upholding integrity and transparency.
