The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has launched an investigation into multiple corruption allegations involving Thinadhoo City Council, following complaints related to financial irregularities in infrastructure projects and governance matters.
A complaint submitted to the ACC alleges corruption in the construction of two monuments at Thinadhoo Harbour, claiming that bills were issued under the name of one company, while payments were deposited into the account of a company owned by Council President Saud Ali. Another complaint accuses the council of drawing salaries under city council status without officially changing the administrative classification of the area.
As part of the investigation, ACC officials visited the Thinadhoo City Council office yesterday to collect evidence. Reports indicate that Council Director Ahmed Nasheed and three other staff members were instructed to stay at home pending further inquiries.
In response, the council released a statement on its official Facebook page, alleging that individuals posing as ACC officers forcibly entered the office and removed items without proper authorization. Mayor Saud Ali, speaking to Dhiyares News, claimed that three individuals entered the council premises and removed materials without using an official vehicle. He further alleged police involvement in the incident.
Mayor Saud stated that he had contacted the ACC and scheduled a meeting at 2:30 PM tomorrow to address the investigation.
However, the ACC issued a statement refuting the council’s claims, confirming that an official team had been dispatched to Thinadhoo City Council to obtain necessary documents for the investigation. The commission accused the council of spreading misinformation and emphasized that all actions taken were in accordance with constitutional and legal mandates.
Meanwhile, the Maldives Police Service confirmed that a theft case was filed by the council, but preliminary findings suggest no such incident took place.
The ACC investigation into Thinadhoo City Council continues as authorities work to ascertain the extent of the alleged misconduct.
