The People’s Majlis has referred the nominations of two candidates proposed for the vacant positions at the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) to its Independent Institutions Committee for further review.
President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu submitted the names of Ahmed Nashid and Abdullah Nashid during the ongoing extraordinary session of parliament to fill the two vacant positions. Following the submission, the parliament accepted the nominations and forwarded them to the committee for assessment.
The ACC vacancies arose following the voluntary resignations of former Vice President Abdussalam and member Toha Mohamed. Their resignations came while the parliamentary committee was in the process of their dismissal, citing allegations of misconduct and conflicts of interest.
A committee report indicated that both former members had engaged in actions that prioritized personal interests and violated legal procedures. Abdussalam was accused of improperly influencing the closure of a case against a former Prosecutor General by concluding that there was insufficient evidence to prosecute, despite contrary findings.
Toha Mohamed faced allegations of misusing his position to influence the withdrawal of a High Court appeal related to an Employment Tribunal ruling. Furthermore, he was accused of approving compensation exceeding MVR 200,000 for a former ACC employee, covering periods during which the employee was concurrently employed at two other institutions—an unprecedented move within ACC.
The Independent Institutions Committee is now tasked with reviewing the nominations of the two candidates before making recommendations to the parliament.
