Maldives and China Discuss Deepening Cooperation in Key Areas

Maldives Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer, accompanied by Finance Minister Dr. Mohamed Shafiq and Construction and Infrastructure Minister Dr. Abdulla Mutalib, is on an official visit to China from May 20-24, at the invitation of Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi. The visit aims to enhance cooperation in critical areas of mutual interest between the two nations.
During the visit, Foreign Minister Zameer held extensive talks with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Minister Zameer highlighted the productive discussions focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation in infrastructure development, healthcare, and tourism. These sectors are pivotal to the socio-economic development of the Maldives and are areas where China has offered significant support through the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
"The discussions were fruitful, and we are optimistic about the future of our bilateral relations," said Minister Zameer. "China's support under the BRI has been instrumental in our infrastructure projects and overall socio-economic growth."
This visit underscores the commitment of both nations to deepen their strategic partnership. The Maldives has been a key participant in the BRI, benefiting from various infrastructure projects that have enhanced connectivity and boosted economic development. The cooperation in healthcare aims to improve the medical facilities and services available to Maldivians, while the focus on tourism seeks to attract more Chinese tourists, thereby bolstering one of the Maldives' primary economic sectors.
China and the Maldives have enjoyed a long-standing relationship marked by mutual respect and cooperation. This visit further solidifies the bonds between the two countries and opens new avenues for collaboration, ensuring that both nations continue to benefit from their strategic partnership.
