MMA Governor Ali Hashim Fails to Appear Before Public Funds Committee

Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) Governor Ali Hashim did not attend yesterday's scheduled meeting of the Public Funds Committee, which was convened to clarify information before recommending his removal.
In a letter to the parliament, the MMA stated that Governor Ali Hashim would not be in office due to illness, preventing him from appearing before the committee. The meeting, set for 11:00 am, was intended to address allegations made by Members of Parliament (MPs) that Hashim has not been fulfilling his duties effectively.
The MMA Act stipulates that the Governor and Deputy Governor of the MMA are appointed and dismissed by the President on the advice of the Parliament. This procedural requirement underscores the importance of the Governor's presence at the committee meeting.
Governor Hashim had previously been scheduled to appear before the parliamentary committee last week, but that meeting was also cancelled. MPs have criticized Hashim for his perceived lack of strong efforts to advise the government and achieve the objectives outlined in the MMA Act since the current administration took office.
Vice-President of Public Funds Committee Member Ahmed Nazim has been vocal about Hashim's shortcomings, asserting that he is not fulfilling his responsibilities as the head of the MMA.
The Public Funds Committee's inquiry into Governor Hashim's performance continues as the parliamentary body seeks to ensure that the MMA's leadership is effectively contributing to the nation's financial stability and development.
