Broadcom Introduces New Accreditation Rules for Journalists

The Broadcasting Commission of Maldives (Broadcom) has developed and introduced a comprehensive set of rules for accrediting journalists. This initiative aims to improve service delivery, assess the educational background and experience of journalists, and maintain a detailed register of those working in the broadcasting sector.
Under the new accreditation rules, journalists will be required to possess at least an MQA Level III certificate in broadcasting, communications, or related fields, or have a minimum of three years of experience in the field. Additionally, applicants must not have been convicted of any criminal offenses.
To ensure journalists are well-prepared for various reporting scenarios, Broadcom has outlined a series of mandatory training programs. These include:
- Broadcasting Code of Practice (Code of Conduct)
- Child Protection in Broadcasting
- Women's Rights in Broadcasting
- Procedures for Covering Natural Disasters and Tragedies
- Guidelines for Covering Protests and Chaotic Situations
- Guidelines for Broadcasting Political Content During Elections
The training programs will assess proficiency in these key areas. According to the policy, journalists will be required to pay RF 100 to participate in the course that assesses their familiarity with the selected areas, and successful candidates will be issued accreditation cards valid for a period of five years.
The introduction of these rules is part of Broadcom’s broader efforts to professionalize the journalism sector in the Maldives, ensuring that journalists are equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge to uphold ethical standards and deliver high-quality reporting. The move has been welcomed by industry experts who believe it will contribute to raising the standards of journalism in the Maldives, ensuring that news coverage is accurate, ethical, and responsible.
Broadcom's initiative reflects a growing global trend of formalising journalism accreditation to safeguard the integrity of the profession and protect the public's trust in media institutions. This development marks a significant step towards enhancing the credibility and professionalism of journalists in the Maldives, aligning with international standards and practices.
