Ahmed Azaan, Member of Parliament for Addu, Hithadhoo constituency, praised the current administration's foreign policy during an appearance on VTV's 'Fasmanzaru' program. He emphasized that the government under President Dr. Mohammed Muizzu is pursuing a balanced foreign policy, unlike the previous administration.
Azaan criticized the previous government led by President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih for overly aligning with a single country, which he claimed allowed that nation's influence to permeate all aspects of Maldivian affairs. "The government acted too closely to one country and its influence spread into everything," Azaan remarked, referencing the actions of the former administration.
In contrast, Azaan highlighted that President Muizzu's government is fostering balanced relations with multiple nations, particularly India and China, without compromising the Maldives' independence and sovereignty. "President Muizzu has always said that Maldives will strengthen relations with countries without compromising Maldives' independence and sovereignty," he stated.
Azaan noted that the current administration is seeking aid from both India and China and is working to establish strong relations with other countries as well. "In the past, aid was only sought from India and not China," he observed, indicating a more diversified approach to international relations.
The MP also addressed concerns raised by opposition MDP members, who expected President Muizzu to sever ties with India. He refuted these concerns by highlighting the withdrawal of Indian troops from the Maldives while maintaining steady relations with India. "Earlier, the MDP said that if Indian troops are withdrawn from this country, Maldives will not get Indian aid and Maldives will not have basic grains like rice, flour, and sugar. Now we are seeing the opposite of that. Indian troops have been withdrawn, and the relations between both countries remain steady," Azaan explained.
In conclusion, Azaan asserted that the foreign policy of President Muizzu's government is sound and effective, with both the President and the Foreign Minister working in the right direction to strengthen Maldives' international relations.
