Maldives Calls for Abolition of Veto at the UN

Maldives has called for the UN Security Council to abolish the rule which allows certain countries an opportunity to veto motions that are considered by the council.
Housing Minister Dr. Ali Haidar delivered a statement on behalf of Maldives at the 78th session of the UN General Assembly. The UN Security Council has rejected a motion to stop Israel's genocide in Palestine based on a single country's vote.
With a country's veto, the UN Security Council has failed to stop the Palestinian genocide. It is a shame that justice for Palestine is stopped by a single vote.

Minister Dr. Ali Haidar, in his statement, called for the recognition of Palestine as an independent state and the return of Israeli occupied Palestinian lands. He has also called on the UN to force Israel to allow Palestinians who have been refugees since 1948 to return their lands.

Five countries currently have veto power in the UN Security Council. They are the United States, the United Kingdom, France, China, and Russia. The United States has vetoed resolutions to allow Palestine to become a member of the United Nations and to stop Israel's inhuman acts.
