President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has declared Sunday, April 21st and Monday, April 22nd, as public holidays for the polling and counting of votes in the Parliamentary elections.
The Elections Commission had previously asked the President to declare the polling day as a public holiday to give all citizens of Maldives the chance to carry out their civic duty of voting on election day.
The Elections Commission has also requested the President to declare April 22nd as a public holiday as, after the polling of the parliamentary elections, the counting of votes and the announcement of provisional results may continue into the following day.
The dates of the school children's examinations have also been changed to avoid coinciding with the parliamentary elections. The examinations, which were scheduled to be held in April, have been brought forward to the end of March.
The parliamentary elections, which were previously scheduled for March 17th, were postponed due to an amendment to the General Elections Act.
