The previous government had budgeted only 1.9 million MVR for the fish factory project announced to be built for the northern fishermen, which was valued at 150 million MVR, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said.
The President said the regional fish factory and ice plant project will cost more than 150 million MVR. However, the previous government had included only 1.9 million MVR in the budget for this year for the project.
The President assured the people of Ihavandhoo that he would work to find a permanent solution for the fishing industry on the scale required by the people of the region. The project will also be implemented on a developer finance basis and full scale work will start this year, he said.
Ihavandhoo, like other islands in the country, has many projects on hold. The President has said he will resume the stalled projects from the previous administration.
The President, who is currently on a visit to the northern islands, said the biggest project to come to the region is the Maldives Economic Gateway Project. The project will be the largest economic project in the country and will benefit all the islands in the region, he said.
