President and First Lady Embark on Unofficial Visit to the UK

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu and First Lady Madam Sajidha Mohamed departed for the United Kingdom on Wednesday evening for an unofficial visit. According to the President’s Office, all expenses related to the trip, including administrative duties as well as family and personal matters, will be personally covered by President Muizzu. However, no details were provided on their expected return to the Maldives.
The President's departure comes shortly after ratifying a series of significant constitutional amendments aimed at strengthening governance and preserving national sovereignty. The amendments include provisions to prevent parliamentary defections, enforce accountability among MPs, and enhance safeguards over the Maldives' maritime zones. A notable clause requires parliamentary approval for the presence of foreign military personnel, underscoring the administration's commitment to protecting the nation's sovereignty.
President Muizzu, who assumed office on November 17, has prioritized addressing key national issues, including restoring public trust in governance and implementing strategic measures to bolster the nation's independence and resources. This visit marks his first unofficial trip abroad since taking office, following a period of focused legislative action and policy implementation.
