President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has said that the government will give priority to all the vulnerable groups in Maldivian society.
Speaking at the inauguration of the Elderly Care Center in the Malé area, established as part of Dr. Muizzu’s 14 Week roadmap, the President said there are other people in society who need priority.
Assuring that the government will continue to give due priority to the elderly, the President said that in addition to the elderly, this government will also give priority to other sections of the population who are isolated and do not receive adequate care and assistance.
“Our vision is to run the country by identifying people with special needs and those who are not on the radar of the government,” he said.
The President further said that some things have been achieved in the first 14 weeks of his administration. However, they are foundational projects, and the government will do more to build on that progress, he said.
The President noted that so far, the centers for the disabled have not been given much attention by the previous governments. The President said that very little is spent on these facilities and that no attention is paid to providing employment and other services to people with disabilities.
Noting that a register of the needy and elderly has not been compiled, the President said the work of compiling a national register has now begun. The list will enable the government to include them as the top priority groups and provide assistance, he said.
He further emphasized that in order to solve the housing problem, the government will provide housing to the beneficiaries by identifying people deserving of priority and providing housing to those people.
The President said it was his presidential promise to give the elderly the respect they deserve in society, and the opportunity to have a say in the affairs of the country.
