Upcoming housing projects will provide opportunities for the elderly to receive housing, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu said.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Elderly Care Centre in the city, the President said the government has started to increase the priority given to the elderly.
"It is our intention to run the country by uplifting people with special needs and putting them firmly on our radar in order to provide various resources in terms of budget," he said.
The Ministry of Social and Family Development will also include a mandate to focus on elderly and displaced persons, he said.
“On top of that, we will give priority to all the people who have been identified. Special centers for people with disabilities have not received much attention.”
The President said that the registers related to various sectors, such as persons with disabilities, are being compiled in consultation with the Cabinet.
“Once that happens, then we will start working to fully collect information on all those who need to be cared for, whether they are single mothers, those who are experiencing domestic abuse, those who need assistance, and those who are neglected," The President said.
The President also said that decisions have been taken on the housing issue and that he will pay attention to the beneficiaries when determining various conditions and categories for housing projects.
"Therefore, a special bill will be sent to parliament in the future. A bill on determining the housing categories will be designed to give due attention to all stakeholders, so the needs of individuals are better taken into account," he said.
