In his speech at the World Government Summit in Dubai today, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu presented several policies to transform Maldives’ economy into a sustainable one.
The President began his speech at the annual summit, initiated by the Emir of Dubai, by thanking the Dubai authorities for holding the summit. The President noted that Dubai is an incomparable example of reaching the heights of development in a short period of time. The President said that this was achieved by introducing the best principles of government and the most innovative services to serve the people.
He then presented a summary of his vision for Maldives to the participants. His vision is to maximize Maldives' wealth and strategic territory, he said.
The President said that his work is to create a country that thinks about the future and moves forward with inclusive innovation and sustainable development. He said his hope is to make the aspirations of Maldivian women, youth, and all Maldivian people in general, a reality.
The President said that his goal is to bring about a major revolutionary economic transformation in Maldives. He said that to do so, the establishment of vital infrastructure and the diversification of the economy are essential.
Highlighting the country’s rapid growth in a short period of time with the introduction of tourism during the 1970s, the President noted that the development transformed the country from a list of least developed countries to an upper middle-income country.
The President said the number of tourists visiting Maldives in the first month of this year was 11 percent higher than the same period last year.
Noting that Maldives’ tourism has been developed through the implementation of sustainable tourism principles, he said the government is working to introduce eco-tourism, as well as sports, education and health tourism.
The President also said that the central port of Maldives will be developed into a free zone, the Velana International Airport will be expanded, and an integrated maritime development project will be implemented near the 8 Degree Road in the north.
Noting that the Maldives’ domestic fisheries are known worldwide for their sustainable fishing practices, the President said the government is investing in doubling the capacity of fish cold storage and packaging in the country. The policy will increase the production of fish products, and the benefits to the fishermen and the industry will be multiplied, he said.
Stating that innovative ideas are an important part of his government's development plan, President Dr. Muizzu said the government has started the work of establishing urban centers in different parts of the country. This will reduce the dependence of the people on Male’, and increase their self-sufficiency.
The President also said that the government is working on a completely new model to solve the housing problem faced by the people. The project aims to transform city life and build an innovative, sustainable and inclusive society. With it, the standard of living of the people will be raised to an unprecedented level with opportunities for businesses to expand.
