The President, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, has said that the projects that have not continued since they started in rural areas have been resumed. The President said this while addressing the Parliament today.
Some developmental projects were initiated during the previous administration to deceive the people and satisfy them during the elections cycle. These projects were not completed or given proper care by the previous government, but the current administration will resume those projects to benefit the people. There are many projects where holes have been dug for road construction or sewerage services, then left for many years. Equipment and materials were brought for the projects, but these have become soiled or destroyed, President Dr. Muizzu said.
Therefore, the projects will be identified and examined in order for the work to be carried out according to the wishes of the people, he said.
The President said that 66 islands in the country had full water service and 101 islands had sewerage service. He said that the water and sewerage works of all the remaining islands would be completed during this term.
In addition, the President said that, in the islands where the ports have not been completed, these ports will be developed to a modern standard. Similarly, the development of major roads in the remaining islands will be ready to start during this term, he said. The President also noted that the Chinese government has provided free assistance for some of these projects.
In addition, the President assured the nation that the electricity service provided to all the islands in Maldives would be improved in order to develop the islands in the country. The President noted that a program called 'My Solar' has been launched in the President’s 14-Week Roadmap to reduce the electricity bill of households with the help of renewable resources.
In the first phase of the program, tenders have been submitted for the purchase of 3 MW solar PV systems, including 3 kW and 5 kW solar panels.
“I will hopefully pave the way for special projects implemented by the councils such as waste disposal and beach protection,” the President said.
The President said that the landfills in many islands of Maldives need to be modernized. The government will start the renovation of 56 landfills, with work beginning on 16 landfills this year. In addition, collection vehicles will be provided to 93 islands and machinery and equipment will be provided to 71 islands.
The President also said that he would establish a gymnasium, a park, a special area for playing sports and a youth center in every village of Maldives. These developments will continue as the economy improves, he said.
