The Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology has asked former President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to share information with the Maldives Police Service regarding the attack on Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem today.
This morning, former President Solih published a post on X describing the attack on Prosecutor Shameem as politically motivated. In the post, he said there should be no place for politically motivated violence in democratic societies.
Former President Solih has said this while no investigative agency has yet revealed who attacked Shameem and why.
The opposition MDP, of which he is the interim president, also described the attack as a result of the government's protection of criminal groups and blamed the government for the attack.
In a tweet, Homeland Security Minister Captain (ret.) Ali Ihusaan said the matter was being investigated by the police. The former president's statement that the attack was politically motivated is a reason to believe that he has strong and reliable information about the people behind the attack and their motives and intentions.
He also requested the former President to share with the Maldives Police Service immediately any reliable information he has received regarding the political objective mentioned in his post.
Minister Ihusaan added that he has instructed the police to work with the former president’s office in this regard. Investigation of the attack on Prosecutor Shameem is the highest priority of the police and the perpetrators will be brought to justice, he said.
Earlier, when the MDP was in opposition, the then ruling party was accused of murders and violence The party has laid heavy allegations against former President Abdullah Yameen in connection with the murder of missing journalist Ahmed Rizwan and murdered blogger Yameen Rasheed.
After the allegations, the party won the presidential election and completed a five-year term. Despite having a super majority in Parliament and the Presidency, the MDP was not able to establish any connections between the acts of violence and former president Yameen.
