The main opposition party, the MDP, has said it will move the impeachment of the President during the current session of the Parliament.
The MDP Parliamentary Group Leader, Alifushi MP Mohamed Rasheed Hussain (Bigey) told a press conference yesterday that the party does not believe that the names of the ministers who were rejected by the parliament can be resubmitted to parliament for a secondary vote.
Bigey added that he would discuss the matter within the MDP parliamentary group and decide what to do with the re-submission of the names of the ministers who were not approved.
After the speech, Bigey said the parliamentary group is working on the impeachment of the President in consultation with the MDP leadership.
Since the resignation of former President Mohamed Nasheed, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has been the President of the MDP.
Bigey added that more than the number of signatures required for the no-confidence motion have already been collected. He said he would submit the matter to parliament before the end of the current session.
However, Bigey did not share a specific date for filing the case. He said a date for submission would be decided depending on the time and circumstances. He said he would file the case at the best time.
"We are discussing this at the party leadership level. So whether the proposal will be submitted tomorrow or the next day will depend on the time and circumstances. We will submit it at the best time," he said.
Bigey added that more than the required number of signatures have been received and some members belonging to the ruling coalition will also sign the motion.
The MDP has changed the way the total number of members of parliament is calculated to exclude vacant seats.
The Attorney General's Office has filed a constitutional case in the Supreme Court of Maldives seeking the annulment of the amendment to the Rules of Procedure of the Parliament.
