US Assistant Secretary of State Donald Lu paid a courtesy call on the President of Maldives, Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, in which they discussed strengthening the relations between the two countries, and the Palestine issue.
The President was grateful to hear the US Assistant Secretary of State’s interest in expanding areas of collaboration between the two countries, which included trade and economic development, tourism cooperation and Indian Ocean Security. The President highlighted how his government’s foreign policy is focused on the development of the nation and diversification of the economy, so his administration is open to new development projects that will benefit the Maldives.
With the month of Ramadan approaching rapidly, the President expressed the importance of a ceasefire being achieved in Palestine as Israeli continues to launch its assault on the Gaza Strip. He acknowledged that a lasting peace is only viable through a two-state solution, with Palestine as its own independent state, having East Jerusalem as its capital as it was pre-1967.
The US has been providing military and financial aid to Israel for decades, with support being offered to them in spite of the war crimes being committed by the Israeli Occupation Forces. The International Court of Justice has recently ruled against Israel, stating that it must not commit any acts that would amount to genocide.
A key piece in the puzzle to create peace in the region is the US due to their bond with Israel, therefore it is critical for world leaders to call on the US to push Israel towards a ceasefire.
