Maldives has decided to join the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in its case against Israel for the genocide being committed in Gaza.
The President’s Office held a press conference yesterday announcing the decision.
Principal Secretary to the President on Public Policy, Abdullah Nazim, said Maldives has decided to participate in the ICJ case against Israel. Nazim said the Attorney General has been appointed as Maldives’ agent in the case.
South Africa has appealed to the ICJ for an order to stop the genocide of civilians in Gaza. The ICJ on Friday ordered that no action be taken that could lead to a genocide in Gaza and that aid be sent to Gaza. However, the court did not call for an end to the exchange of attacks.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected the ICJ's decision. He said he would continue to protect his country and people within the international legal framework.
The UN Security Council is scheduled to meet on Wednesday to discuss the ICJ's interim decisions.
The number of people killed in the inhuman offensive launched by Israel since October 7th last year stands at 26,083 More than 16,000 women and children were among those martyred. The number of injured has risen to 64,000.
