STELCO to Provide Battery Electricity to 5 Islands

At least five islands will be supplied with battery electricity before the end of this year, STELCO Managing Director, Hussain Fahmy said.
At a ceremony to mark the 74th anniversary of the introduction of electricity, Fahmy said the company is preparing to start providing at least 12 hours of battery power to at least five Islands in Kaafu Atoll, Alif Alif Atoll, Alif Dhaal Atoll and Vaavu Atoll before the end of this year.
At a ceremony with STELCO’s board, management and employees yesterday, Fahmy said the company is working on hybrid generators that can run on diesel, as well as other sources, such as renewable energy.
STELCO is already preparing to implement a project called Sixth Power Development to increase its capacity to meet the demand of electricity in the Malé area.
STELCO’s main objectives are to generate electricity in environmentally friendly and sustainable ways and to increase the use of renewable energy in its services.
In order to achieve the government's target of making Sri Lanka a carbon neutral country by 2030, STELCO has made many successful efforts in generating and using renewable energy.
