Vice President Urges International Funding For Climate Protection

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef has urged members of the “Group of 77 and China” to prioritize and accelerate climate financing and to push for more funding for robust climate action.
Speaking on behalf of Sri Lanka at the third summit of the Group of 77 and China, the Vice President advocated ease of access to finance. The summit is being held under the slogan “Leaving No One Behind.”
Speaking at the Summit, he emphasized the need to simplify the procedures for receiving assistance from the Fund as much as possible, instead of solely considering a country’s productivity ratio in determining the beneficiaries of this Fund. The Vice President also noted that the Group of 77 and China should work to promote its priorities in the international arena.
The Vice President also said that finance should be increased to adapt to climate change. He also noted that the unity of this group played a key role in the implementation of the 'Loss and Damage Fund' at the 28th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28).
He further expressed the hope that the countries most in need of the fund would receive its assistance and urged developed countries to provide generous assistance to the fund.
The Vice President is in Uganda to attend the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and the 3rd South Summit under the Group of 77 and China (G77) in Kampala.
