The Vice President, Uz. Hussain Mohamed Latheef, has attended the opening ceremony of the 19th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) today. He will be delivering statements on behalf of the Maldives at the Plenary Session of the Summit.
The Vice President’s visit is following Foreign Minister Moosa Zameer’s arrival in Uganda for the Summit, where he has already made statements regarding the Maldives’ hopes for the future.
The Foreign Minister began his visit to Uganda on the morning of the 16th of January. Minister Zameer attended the ministerial meeting, which was held before the summit. Minister Zameer has made three proposals at the ministerial meeting. He said in a post on X that he delivered a speech on behalf of Maldives at the NAM meeting today.
Minister Zameer made 3 recommendations:
- 1. Restructure existing working methods to improve efficiency by taking advantage of the latest technological advances
- 2. Recognize global changes and respond to emerging new challenges, including security threats
- 3. Reform and re-strengthen the multilateral system and create an environment conducive to international cooperation
