MWSC Managing Director, Abdul Matheen Mohamed, expressed his concern over the heavy rains which have caused flooding in the city. He stated that the storm water drainage system would be upgraded to double the strength of its current capacity.
Recent rains have caused flooding in the streets and damage to houses and offices. Vehicles on the roads were also damaged.
The storm water systems are installed in two areas in the city. They are located on the north and south sides of the city. On the north side, the storm water system was installed at Kanbaa Aisa Rani Hingun and Shaheed Ali Hingun. On the south side, the storm water system was installed in Ameenee Magu and Buruzu Magu.
He noted that 16 pump stations have been installed in the aforementioned areas. The pumps are currently drawing 400 cubic meters of water per hour from 218 points. The new pumps will have the capacity to intake 5,000 cubic meters of water per hour. These pumps will also be able to empty the water that has formed on the roads after the rains, he said.
In addition, he stated his confidence in the fact that the work on Ameenee Magu road would solve the issue of flooding once completed.
