Opposition PPM Schedules Mega Rally in Male' to Protest Against Government Corruption

MALE', Maldives - July 19, 2023 - The Opposition Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) has publicly announced plans to stage a mega rally in the bustling heart of the capital city, Male'. The rally, which has been scheduled for Friday, July 21, 2023, is aimed at voicing stern opposition against government corruption, meddling in the judiciary, and other purported atrocities committed by the current administration.
Party officials have stated that the rally is set to commence at 4 p.m., with the starting point being outside the PPM's headquarters.
As discontent grows within the nation, the PPM rally is intended to give voice to the disenfranchised and shed light on concerns the party believes have been left in the shadows for too long. The PPM has cited a number of grievances, leading with the accusation of rampant government corruption.
They also plan to highlight what they term as "government meddling of the judiciary," which they claim undermines the principles of democracy and threatens the country's rule of law. This echoes rising domestic and international concerns over the independence of Maldives' judicial system.
The "numerous other atrocities" the PPM purports the government has committed will also be addressed, though specifics were not provided in the initial announcement.
The PPM has urged its supporters and citizens of the Maldives who share their concerns to join in solidarity at the rally, emphasizing the importance of collective voice in influencing change.
