The Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) welcomed a new member to its ranks on Thursday, as MP Ali Hameed of L.Isdhoo constituency joined the party. Hameed had previously been elected to the parliament as a member of the Jumhoory Party (JP), making him the first JP MP to join the MDP.
A small event was held to mark the occasion at Muliyaage, the official residence of the president. The event was attended by senior officials of the government and MDP's parliamentary group. Hameed officially signed on with the MDP during the event.
Despite joining the MDP, Hameed voiced his support for his former party's decision to contest in the upcoming presidential election. However, his decision to switch parties comes at a time when other JP members who hold political appointments in the government have been leaving the party following the decision by JP leader Qasim Ibrahim to run for president.
