Man sentenced to 40 years for raping a minor

The criminal court in the Maldives has sentenced a man to 40 years in jail after he was convicted of raping a minor and creating child pornography.

Mohamed Shazleef, from the island of L.Kalaidhoo, was charged with both crimes on January 6, 2018.

According to the state, Shazleef took the 17-year-old girl to a forest on the island and raped her, while also filming the act.

He was found guilty of both charges and sentenced on January 18, 2022, with each charge carrying a sentence of 20 years.
