A 37-year-old woman with a mental illness was allegedly gang-raped by three men in a village in Uttar Pradesh, Indian police confirmed on Monday.
The incident occurred on October 17 when the woman was on her way to the market to purchase household items. She was allegedly taken by force to a nearby hotel by one man from Janakpuri and two others from Janakpuri Mohalla, where the assault took place.
The woman went missing for four days, and her family reported her disappearance. She was eventually found on October 21, crying in a local park. The police, after taking her statement, initiated an investigation into the assault and are actively pursuing the suspects involved.
This latest case adds to the troubling trend of sexual violence in India, a country that reports some of the highest numbers of rape and murder cases globally. Authorities have faced increasing pressure to address the systemic issues contributing to the widespread violence against women, particularly those from vulnerable groups such as individuals with mental health conditions.
