Government’s failure to keep vows is evident through bi-elections: Wadde

Member of Parliament for the Ungoofaaru constituency Mohamed Waheed (Wadde) said that the government’s failure to uphold their campaign vows are very clearly evident through the results and proceedings of past bi-elections.
Debating the budget proposed for 2023, Wadde stated that Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) campaigned “Jazeeraa Raajje” manifesto during the last presidential election and “Aneh Dhivehi Raajje” manifesto during the 2008 election.
Wadde argued that the MDP rule was overturned through a coup after a three year term and the public approval for achievement of this administration is proven when senior members of the opposition, DRP, such as MP Nashiz and MP Rozaina joined the ranks of MDP.
Wadde stated that the first MDP government was disadvantaged when their term was abruptly interrupted, however, the 2023 budget is the last chance for the current MDP government to run the 2018 manifesto to completion.
Wadde stated that N. Magoodhoo bi-elections have relayed a message to the government, albeit embarrassingly, saying that vows are not just concrete projects but the island manifesto sold to the public during their campaign in 2018.
Wadde expressed his disappointment over the President Ibrahim Mohamed SOlih’s administration’s failure to implement the promised developments, stating that despite the vastness of the proposed budget of MVR 42 billion for 2023, the people have gained nothing; neither any advantages, nor satisfaction, due to the excessiveness of funds spent.
Wadde stated that what the people have acquired through state borne expenses is unwavering debt and financial stress, stretched across generations to come.
