MDP delays announcing party's primary

State Minister of the Finance Ministry and Spokesperson of Maldives Democratic Party (MDP), Anas Abdul Sattar stated that the date of the primary election, to choose the party ticket-holder for the 2023 Presidential Election, will be announced after the completion of administrative details.
Although Anas said that MDP has not decided on a date for the primary, MDP Deputy Chairperson Ibrahim Waheed (Ibrey) told the media that the primary was initially scheduled for next month, however, it was delayed due to school holidays in December.

The party leader, President Mohamed Nasheed has announced his intentions to run in the primary on multiple occasions and President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had also expressed his interest in running for a second term. However, Nasheed believed that President Solih running for a second term may not be in the best interests of the party.

Simultaneously, MDP is unofficially split into two factions; Solih faction and Nasheed faction, evidenced by the parliamentary debates where these two factions struggle to corporate.
