Centeral bank of the Maldives, Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) has revealed that last year US$ 649 million, or over a billion Maldivian Rufiyaa was sold last year.
Statistics issued for 2021, shows that last year, US$ 649 million was sold off. This is a 2.4 percent increase from 2020.
Fifty-nine percent of this was sold to state owned enterprises and amounts to US$ 382.9 million. This is a three percent reduction compared to 2020.
Another 35 percent was sold to banks – a figure amounting to US$ 266.1 million. This figure includes US$ 171.7 million sold as weekly allocations and dollar purchases from Maldivians flying abroad.
US$ 15 million was sold to importers bringing in medication and food supplies.
