Parliament Speaker, former President Nasheed, has warned President Ibrahim Mohamed of retribution.
He made the warning in a message to the National Secretariat Whatsapp group of ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP).
In the message, Nasheed accused the President of sending a group to confront the Deputy Speaker MP Eva Abdullah, when she visited Hinnavaru island in Lhaviyani atoll. MP Eva, is the North Galolhu Constituency Member of Parliament and Nasheed’s cousin. President Solih hails from Hinnavaru island, while MP Eva’s father is also from the island and is closely related.
In his message, Nasheed asked whether if President Solih should be treated in the same manner if he decided to visit North Galolhu.
This is the latest in the spat between the Presidents. The rivalry had heated up ahead of MDP’s internal elections. Nasheed is backing MP Imthiyaz Fahmy for the Chairperson slot, while President Solih has lent his support to Minister of Economic Development Fayyaz Ismail. Both factions have traded heavy words, accusing the other of inappropriate conduct, corruption, and misdemeanors.
