Residents of Komandoo (Shaviyani Atoll) have raised concerns after Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) campaigners who had entered into a house under quarantined continued with their campaigning throughout the island. The MDP campaigners had visited Komandoo to drum up support for Mohamed Rasheed; their candidate for the recently-vacated Komandoo parliamentary seat; ahead of the Komandoo bi-elections scheduled for 5 February.
The MDP campaigners who had violated quarantine include MP Rozeina Adam (MDP-Addu Meedhoo) and Minister of Education Dr Aishath Ali. They had entered Vaimatheege, which was under quarantine as people in that household had tested positive for Covid-19.
"Rozeina and Dr Aishath [Ali] came out of the house and went about the whole island. People in that house were positive for Covid. They should be a little bit more responsible than this, no? Minister Aishath Ali had also not been wearing a mask", a Komandoo resident told The Maldives Journal.
It is worth noting that the Health Protection Agency had responded to the recent spike in cases of Covid-19 by tightening restrictions on travel between Male City and the islands. The restrictions had, however, been announced after the first team of MDP campaigners to Komandoo returned to Male City.
