The state-of-the-art equipment installed at the operating rooms of Dharumavantha Hospital during former President Abdullah Yameen’s term had fallen into disrepair due to extended disuse.
According to an official of Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH) who spoke to The Maldives Journal on the condition of anonymity, the MVR 1.5 million in equipment that had been procured for the state-of-the-art operating room are deteriorating and have become infested with fungus.
“All of the equipment in the operating theatre’s control room have been infested with fungus”, a physician who knew about the matter told The Maldives Journal. “This government has no intention to ever use the theatre”.
According to a medical engineer who had spoken to The Maldives Journal, the equipment that had been procured for the theatre was of such a high quality that only a few hospitals in this region had such equipment. As this equipment had been custom-built for Dharumavantha Hospital, the engineer said that replacements would have to be procured.
The engineer had mentioned that the Hospital’s MRI scanner was also on the verge of becoming unusable due to extended disuse. The root cause had been the malfunctioning of the hospital’s central temperature control system that had remained in that state of disrepair since, said the engineer.
Many of Dharumavantha Hospital’s assets are deteriorating and falling into disrepair, said an IGMH official who spoke to The Maldives Journal. Although physicians had requested that the equipment be used, neither the government nor the hospital’s management had allowed it.
