Nasheed Endorses Petition for Parliamentary System, Expresses Desire to Become Prime Minister

Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has called on all parliamentarians to sign a petition calling for President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to change the Maldives' system of government from a presidential to a parliamentary system.
The petition initiated by leading members of the ruling Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) and a group of parliamentarians is intended to call upon President Solih to implement a parliamentary system of government in the Maldives, as per the MDP's manifesto for the 2018 presidential elections.
MP Ibrahim "Bonde" Rasheed (Maafannu-Central) and MP Ibrahim "Henveiru-North" Muizzu attended the ceremony to initiate the petition.
Speaker Nasheed's message to the MDP National Majilis WhatsApp group read that he wishes for the petition to be signed by as many people as possible.
Speaker Nasheed messaged President Solih requesting for a parliamentary system to be established before the 2023 presidential elections. He also shared with the president that he wished to become Prime Minister.
Nasheed wishes for the governing system to be changed in February 2023, and for the current parliament to appoint an interim president until the 2024 parliamentary elections.
Speaking on behalf of the President, Spokesperson for the President's Office Mabrook Azeez stated that as the current governing system had been chosen by a public referendum and said that President Solih likewise believes that any changes to the system of government may only be changed by such a referendum.
