Former President and incumbent Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has stated that he is hesitant to return to the Maldives until the investigation into the May 6 attack is complete and the perpetrators are detained.
In a letter addressed to the parliament, Nasheed assured that he is stating as such due to the current situation, not because he is unhappy with the government or the authorities.
He highlighted that according to police, the investigation is still ongoing.
"My family, well-wishers and I are wary of my return to the Maldives until the investigation is completed and the perpetrators are detained", said Nasheed.
Speaker Nasheed has asked to be pardoned for remaining abroad and requested the parliament for leave. He iterated that he is confident the Deputy Speaker will conduct parliament in accordance with the law.
Former President Nasheed stressed that despite residing abroad, he will continue to serve the parliament and Maldives.
