MP Shiyam Requests Police Board's Decision to be Investigated for Political Influence

Parliament representative for Naifaru constituency Ahmed Shiyam has requested to examine whether the Police Board’s decision to terminate seven police executives was politically influenced.
In a letter addressed to the Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed, MP Shiyam stated that the Police Board has decided to fire seven police officers in executive positions. The document read that although the Police Board was established to determine the suitability and capability of officers on the front lines, it is unacceptable for the board to terminate officers who have made numerous contributions to the country and the Maldives Police Service.
Shiyam noted that three of the seven Police Board members are under the influence of the Minister of Home Affairs, and two of the members were appointed by the President. In the letter, Shiyam iterated that he believes the decision to terminate the seven officers was influenced by the Home Minister and the President.
Therefore, the Naifaru MP has requested the Parliamentary Committee on National Security to examine and review the Police Board’s decision to evaluate whether it was politically influenced.
Additionally, he proposed questioning Home Minister Imran Abdulla if the board’s decision to fire the seven officers is a just decision based on the appropriate legal measures.
Shiyam has also requested for Imran to be questioned regarding the extent of political influence on the decision, and whether it is fair for the officers to be fired in this manner after having made several contributions to the nation and the police service.
