Fisheries Minister Calls for Global Collaboration on Sustainable Ocean Use

Minister of Fisheries & Ocean Resources emphasised the importance of global cooperation for sustainable ocean management during the thematic discussion, "The Ocean Decade of United Nations in the Context of Global Development Initiative," at the China-Indian Ocean Region Forum in Kunming, China.
Highlighting the Maldives’ deep connection to the oceans, Minister Shiyam described the marine environment as central to Maldivian life while underscoring its vulnerability to climate change. He called for the integration of scientific expertise, collective action, and robust policies to address oceanic challenges.
The minister pointed to the United Nations’ Ocean Decade initiative as a key opportunity to advance the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through inclusivity, innovation, and action-driven strategies. The Global Development Initiative (GDI), he noted, complements these goals by promoting equitable ocean research, biodiversity protection, and sustainable fisheries.
Discussing the necessity of collaboration, Shiyam remarked, "While working alone might lead to faster results, true progress and enduring success come from working together. By joining forces, we can achieve greater and more sustainable outcomes for our oceans and future generations."
Minister Shiyam outlined the GDI's contributions, including early warning systems, shared resources, and innovations in sustainable aquaculture and fisheries. He urged countries to unite, share resources, and pool expertise to address global challenges, ensuring empowered fishing communities and the preservation of biodiversity.
