The Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Resources, Ahmed Shiyam, welcomed a delegation of representatives from prominent Chinese companies to explore investment opportunities in the Maldives’ fisheries, mariculture, and blue economy sectors. The meeting was held at the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources as part of the Government’s efforts to boost foreign investments in the sector.
Minister Shiyam provided an overview of the Government’s ambitious plans, including the development of sport fishing harbours and the promotion of mariculture initiatives. He reiterated the administration's commitment to supporting investments aimed at enhancing these areas.
The Chinese delegation, which included business leaders and officials from the First Institute of Oceanography under China’s Ministry of Natural Resources, engaged in discussions on fostering collaboration in research and training related to mariculture. Both parties also explored the possibility of formalising an agreement between the Maldives Marine Research Institute and the First Institute of Oceanography to facilitate joint marine research efforts.
Minister Shiyam emphasized the administration’s focus on revitalising the fisheries sector, aiming to elevate it to match the tourism industry in economic significance. He highlighted that enhancing the fisheries sector is a priority for President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s administration, with its development expected to play a key role in increasing foreign exchange earnings for the Maldives.
