Supreme Court Schedules Pres. Yameen's Appeal Hearing

The Supreme Court has scheduled the appeal hearing for former President Yameen Abdul Gayoom's Criminal Court ruling backed by the High Court.
The Criminal Court in November 2019 ruled that the money laundering charges against former President Yameen in the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) case have been proven.
The Criminal Court sentenced him to five years in prison and issued a USD 5 million fine.
The ruling was appealed in High Court on January 21, 2021. The judge ruled in favor of the presiding judges' decision. President Yameen then appealed the matter to the Supreme Court.
The Supreme Court has scheduled the appeal hearing on September 12 and 13, at 9 am
After spending an extended period in prison in accordance with the Criminal Court's ruling, the former president now remains on house arrest due to COVID-19.
